Does Your Battery Pack Need a Boost?

The Ford Ranger EV was offered with either Lead Acid (PbA) battery packs or Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). The 8 volt PbA batteries were expected to last less than 5 years and the NiMH about 10. Both battery types have now exceeded their expected lifespan and are one of the major issues we need to face to keep these trucks on the road today.

What can a Ranger EV owner do when their battery pack nears the end of its life? If you have PbA the answer is short - you need to replace all the 8 volt cells with 12 volt or convert to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4). The 8 volt batteries are unique to the Ford Ranger EV and are no longer available. If you have NiMH, there are more options. In the short term, you may be able to restore some of you battery life, or you may be able to get help to rejuvenate your modules, but eventually, you too will need to convert to LiFePO4 or some other future battery chemisty. The good news is  you can still enjoy your truck......the bad news is changing out your traction battery it’s not going to be cheap and you’ll likely need some help doing it.

Recent battery technology has developed Lithium based Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) that offers extended range from a pack that is lighter than the Lead at almost the same cost. Most of the hybrid vehicles being sold today utilize NiMH batteries, but all of the newest designs utilize LiFePO4. This is the battery technology for today and the Ranger EV community is working hard to make this technology a plug-n-play option  for both PbA and NiMH Ranger EV owners.

Traction Battery

Find information and resources to  test your pack and service original NiMH traction batteries, 12v replacement for 8v PbA, or LiFePO4 replacements for both.

Aging batteries is one of the most critical issues facing the Ranger EV owner today. Monitoring the condition of your traction battery with this test will help you identify failing modules.

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) restores the driving range of your NiMH Ranger EV by performing a deep discharge and then recharge.

The heart of the Ranger EV is the traction battery. Replacement modules are available for both PbA and NiMH Ranger EVs, and some service/renewal is available for NiMH.
